What the GAF tiers actually require

GAF is North America's largest roofing manufacturer, and it certifies contractors in tiers. The top tiers can’t be bought into. To hold them, a contractor has to do more than prove proper licensing and maintain verified insurance. They must show an established track record, and keep crews trained to GAF's installation standards, continuously. If they fall short on any of it, the certification goes away.

Master Elite is the top residential certification. GAF holds it to a small fraction of roofing contractors in the country.

Platinum Elite is the commercial-side equivalent: the highest tier for low-slope and commercial systems, held by fewer contractors still, because commercial roofing is where the opportunists thin out fast.

Most certified contractors hold one or the other, because most companies are built for one kind of roofing. Colonial holds both. Master Elite on the residential side, Platinum Elite on the commercial side, plus GAF President's Club for 2026. That combination is rare enough that our own GAF rep uses us as the example of what the program is supposed to produce. Yes, you read that right - we’re actually setting the standard, not just meeting a set of credentials.

Why you should care about the manufacturer's opinion

Because it changes what you can buy. The strongest warranties GAF makes can only be registered by contractors at these certification levels. The uncertified bidder isn't offering you a cheaper version of the same roof, but a roof that's locked out of the coverage that really matters.

The certification audits the exact things you can't verify from a proposal: whether the insurance is real, whether the training is current, whether the track record exists. Certifications belong to the company that earned it, and it's only worth something if that company's own crews do the installing. A certified logo on the contract and a subbed-out crew on the roof is little more than a costume.

So when the bids come in, ask each contractor one question: what does GAF certify you to install, and at what tier? A licensed contractor can legally replace a roof on your building.. A Platinum Elite contractor had to prove, to the company guaranteeing the roof, that they deserve to.
